An addiction center is a facility which would provide services to assist in eradicating addiction on a personal or group level. There are many different types. Educational centers, community centers, hotlines, inpatient services, out patient services, and many others. Narconon Arrowhead is a full service addiction center. We are a long term, drug free and non-traditional drug rehab facility. We also are heavily involved in school drug education to educate and prevent students from heading down a road full of pain and misery. Prescription drug abuse and addiction is one of the fastest growing forms of addiction in the world. Statistics show more and more drug rehab treatment admissions for prescription drugs as their primary substance of abuse, while the numbers reporting prescription drug abuse along with their primary drug of abuse is reaching epidemic proportions. This is a wide category covering painkillers, anti-depressants, and many of the numerous ‘medications’ being prescribed to handle emotional and physical pain. The black market for these substances is huge and these are available on many street corners and campuses. The side effects of these substances, even after cessation of use can be almost intolerable and contributes to escalating rates of violence and suicide, especially among our young.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition, characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and drug use which is accompanied by functional and molecular changes in the brain. In addition to being addicted to methamphetamine, chronic methamphetamine abusers exhibit symptoms that can include violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. They also can display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions. The paranoia can result in homicidal as well as suicidal thoughts. With chronic use, tolerance for methamphetamine can develop. Users may take higher doses of the drug, take it more frequently, or change their method of drug intake. In some cases, abusers forego food and sleep while injecting as much as a gram of the drug every 2 to 3 hours over several days until the user runs out of the drug or is too disorganized to continue. Chronic abuse can lead to psychotic behavior, characterized by intense paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations, and out-of-control rages that can be coupled with extremely violent behavior.

Substance abuse generally starts with an attempt to handle pain. This could me mental or physical pain and does not necessarily need to be great. A teenager uses drugs for the first time and finds they helped with shyness and so uses them more and more often, as a false solution to the pains of adolescence. A mother finds relief from family stress with anti-depressants and so continues their use and even increases the dosages. Physical pain is relieved with prescription painkillers and so they are continued more and more frequently. All of these substances have their own particular side-effects which create new situations and new sources of mental and physical pain, and so other substances are now used in an attempt to handle these new pains. Thus most of those entering substance abuse treatment find themselves having problems with not just one substance but multiple substances. A drug treatment center to be truly effective needs to address the entire individual as well as the many situations the individual finds himself involved with as a result of addiction and/or alcoholism.
